How to Install Felt on a Pool Table: A Step-by-Step Overview

Felt installation is the step that intimidates most first-time builders — it looks fiddly, and a mistake here is more visible than a mistake in the base frame. In reality, it's a manageable process once you understand the sequence. Here's the general idea of how it works.

1. Measure and cut with margin to spare

Cut your felt with several extra inches on every side beyond the playing surface. You'll trim the excess after it's stretched and secured, but you can't add material back if you cut it too close. Lay the felt out flat for a few hours before cutting so it can relax and any fold lines settle out.

2. Start from the center, not the edges

Secure the felt starting from the center of each side and work outward toward the corners, alternating sides as you go — similar to how you'd tighten lug nuts on a wheel. This keeps tension even across the surface instead of pulling it unevenly from one corner.

3. Stretch before you staple

Pull the felt taut before each staple goes in, but avoid overstretching — felt that's pulled too tight in one area will show as a slightly different shade or texture under light, and can distort the roll of the ball. Consistent, moderate tension across the whole surface matters more than maximum tightness in any one spot.

4. Work the corners last

Corners are the trickiest part because the felt has to fold and tuck rather than just stretch flat. Take your time here — it's the part most likely to look rushed if you hurry.

5. Trim and finish

Once everything is secured, trim the excess felt cleanly along the edges. A sharp blade and a steady hand matter more here than any special tool.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Cutting the felt too close to size before starting, leaving no margin for adjustment.
• Stapling all the way along one side before starting the opposite side, which pulls the felt unevenly.
• Rushing the corners, which is the part most visible from a normal viewing angle.
• Skipping the rail cushions and going straight to the bed — the rails typically get their own felt covering as a separate step.
